Jagger Jones is a whiz kid from Chicago’s South Side. Ask him anything about Ancient Egypt, and Jagger can fill hours describing all that he knows. But when he and his precocious little sister Aria fall more than three thousand years back in time to the court of Amarna, Egypt, Jagger discovers a truth that rocks his world: books don’t teach you everything there is to know.

Mummies, pyramids, and cool hieroglyphics make awesome movie props, but the ancient court of Amarna is full of over-sized scorpions, magical amulets, and evil deities determined to scare unwanted visitors away. If Jagger and Aria are to return safely home, they must find nine soul-infested gemstones, defeat an evil general, save the royal family, and figure out how to rescue themselves!

Armed only with Jagger’s knowledge of history and a few modern objects mined from his pockets and Aria’s sparkly purse, the siblings have exactly one week to solve supernatural riddles and rescue the royal family. If they can pull it off, Jagger Jones just might return to Chicago a hero.

Guest post from Malayna: Road to Publication

Wow! What a path I have travelled.

It all started when my son, then nine, told me he wished someone would write a book about a kid who looked like him lost in ancient Egypt. Since I’m an Egyptologist, and a writer, I figured I should be that someone.

A year or two later I had a manuscript in hand but no knowledge of how to turn my stack of papers into an actual book. Chicago’s very savvy writing coach, Esther Hershenhorn, gave my pages a look and suggested I start over with an eye to minimizing the boring history and maximizing the fun history, the magic, and the adventure.

A few years later, I had a second, much improved, version. I sent a fair number of queries to literary agents before landing my very fabulous agent, Liza Fleissig. And it took her a hot minute to find my terrific publisher, Month9Books. Then came more editing, a number of title ideas, a few covers, and, finally, the real life book I’d been imagining.

My inspiring son is now 16 and 6’2” … because in addition to learning a few things about patience and thick skin, I’ve learned that kids grow faster than books.
