It’s no secret that some people struggle to stay focused during the day. As you can imagine, it can cause problems for people trying to work or do things outside of work. You’re likely reading this article because your constant lethargy is taking a toll on your mental health.

If you’ve been to your GP and they can’t find any apparent reason why you seldom feel mentally alert each day, don’t despair. There are a few things you can do to boost your mental capacity and feel more fresh and alert. Take a look at these examples for inspiration:

1. Have a cup of coffee

There’s a reason why coffee is the hot beverage of choice preferred by millions of Brits each morning that want to wake themselves up fully! The caffeine in your morning cup of coffee binds to your brain’s receptors and prevents adenosine from reaching them.

In case you didn’t know, adenosine is a molecule that gets produced by your body throughout the day and is part of the digestion process. When your body runs out of digestible sugars from food to use as energy, adenosine causes you to feel tired.

An early-morning coffee helps you to feel refreshed and alert, especially if you’ve had little sleep in the previous night!

2. Consume a small CBD gummy

CBD is short for cannabidiol, and as you might have guessed, it’s commercially available from cannabis plants. It’s part of a group of compounds called cannabinoids derived from those plants.

What you may not know is that the human body contains endocannabinoids. They are molecules produced naturally by the body and form part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The job of this system is to regulate various functions, such as sleep.

Endocannabinoids are similar to the cannabinoids produced by cannabis plants. There is evidence to suggest that consuming a small quantity of CBD, such as in a gummy form, can make you feel more alert.

You can buy CBD gummies online or locally from some independent retailers, and they’re entirely legal to purchase because they don’t contain THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is a cannabinoid that makes you feel ‘high,’ in case you wondered!

3. Flood your day with light

Did you know that your body produces melatonin when you’re in a dark room? Melatonin is a hormone that regulates your sleep and acts on receptors inside your body to encourage you to sleep.

When you wake up in the morning, you should flood your rooms with light to decrease melatonin production. And when you’re at work, avoid working in dimly-lit areas to stay alert.

4. Take a cold shower

Finally, you might not like this idea, but you should take a cold shower if you’re feeling incredibly sleepy. The shock of having a cold shower increases your metabolic rate and results in you feeling more alert.

One other advantage of taking a cold shower is that you won’t be in there for long, giving you more time to get ready for starting your day!
