Reading & Stuff Update 4: Some New Favourites and Some Disappointments

Hi everyone! So I haven't done one of these in a while but I wanted to talk about some of the books that I've read recently! See my previous update here.

So I have a few new favourite reads! I absolutely loved Circe, it was a brilliant and captivating re-imagining of the story of Circe and it made me feel so many emotions. It also set me off on wanting to read more Greek myth retellings.

I also loved The Shark Caller which is a middle grade about a girl who lives in Papua New Guinea. She wants to become a shark caller, someone who can get sharks to come to them. A new girl comes to stay on the island and we see the girls at first hating each other but then becoming friends. It was a beautiful story and I highly recommend it!

Another read I have enjoyed recently is The General's Wrath and Other Short Stories, this is a book containing five short stories which each had a unique supernatural twist. I wrote a review of it here. You may recognise the author who I have featured on my blog before for her children's books! I really loved this collection and I want more people to read it! Also, if you have any short story recommendations please do let me know!

Additionally, I read a middle grade called Utterly Dark and the Face of the Deep. This one is about a girl who lives near the sea and everyone fears it for the stories of mysterious islands sometimes appearing and a creature that surfaced and destroyed in old times. I appreciated the unique feel of this book but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. It was very strange and quite grim and I just didn't love it.

Furthermore, I picked up The Atlas Six which is a very hyped book right now. This one follows six people with special powers who are invited to a secret society and they have to survive a year. I really did not like this book! The characters were annoying and unlikeable and the whole plot was just people thinking about how to be better than others for no reason. I ended up DNFing this one.

I am currently reading Ariadne which is another Greek myth retelling and I'm really liking it so far! It's really interesting comparing the stories from Circe to how they differ in this book. This is another book where the story of a woman who was treated badly in Greek mythology is told and we get to see the author's reimagining of their life. I love stories like this, two of my favourite reads that follow someone's life are The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. If you have any other recommendations please let me know.

Have you read any of these books?
