Beat the Burnout! 3 Ways to Take a Break and Feel More Inspired

Whether you’re working from home, starting up your full-time career as a freelancer, or you’re in the middle of writing the world’s next bestselling book, there’s one thing no one is immune to; experiencing burnout.

Burnout occurs more than you might think when you’re overworking your mind and body and not giving yourself the breaks you need. Not only can it cause you to feel uninspired and tired, but it also can lead to some problematic health issues, including increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

So, no matter what you’re working on, it’s important to walk away from time to time and practice a little self-care. Use these tips to get started so you can beat the burnout and get back to being the next big success story!

1. Unplug for a Day

You may not be able to take a long vacation, but sometimes taking a vacation from your electronic devices is all you need to feel better. It’s so easy to get distracted by computers, cell phones, social media, YouTube, and everything in between.

Pick a day to completely unplug from all of your electronic devices. Use it to do something you enjoy, or something that will make you feel accomplished. Bonus points if you can do something that gets you outside!

2. Spring Cleaning

Spring is just around the corner, and having a clean, organized workspace can make you feel less stressed and can help you to avoid burnout. Plus, taking “cleaning breaks” is a great way to get in some physical activity. Getting your body moving throughout the day can give you an energy boost, and if you clean up outside it can even boost your mood.

Take a ten-minute break to clean the bathroom. Fold laundry for 20 minutes. Give yourself two hours to do some gutter cleaning or hire a service to take care of it while you clean up your yard. Having a clean space will make you feel good, and can help to inspire you to get back to work.

3. Eat Well, Sleep Well, Get Moving

Again, any type of exercise is good for your mind and body when it comes to fighting fatigue and improving your overall health. But, it’s also important to take care of yourself in other ways. You’ve probably heard the saying “you are what you eat”. So, while you might be tempted to reach for a pint of ice cream or a cheese pizza for some comfort, choosing healthier options will keep you more alert and focused, and give you more energy.

It’s also essential to get enough sleep. Don’t let your work keep you up at night. Develop a nighttime routine that allows you to go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning. Getting enough sleep helps you to stay focused and alert, and will keep you from burning out without having to depend on two or three cups of coffee each morning.

Don’t be afraid to use your own techniques to avoid burnout when you’re working. As long as you try something that gets you moving, gets you away from your computer for a while, and allows you to find some relaxation, you’ll be taking a step in the right direction.
